Λέων Αμφιπόλεως - The Lion of Amphipolis
Ο Λέων της Αμφίπολης είναι έργο επιτάφιας πλαστικής του 4ου αιώνα π.Χ., μνημείο πολεμικής δόξας και πράξης. Σύμφωνα με τον καθηγητή Δημήτρη Λαζαρίδη, στήθηκε προς τιμή του Λαομέδοντα από τη Λέσβο, ενός από τους πιο αξιόλογους τριηράρχους του Μεγάλου Αλεξάνδρου που εγκαταστάθηκαν στην Αμφίπολη. Έχει ύψος περισσότερο από τέσσερα μέτρα και μαζί με τα βάθρα υπερβαίνει τα οκτώ μέτρα. Μόνο η κεφαλή του έχει μήκος δύο μέτρα. Σύγχρονες λαϊκές δοξασίες θέλουν τον λέοντα να μην έχει γλώσσα, για να μην αποκαλύψει σε ποιον ανήκει ο τάφος, κρατώντας το μυστικό.
The Lion of Amphipolis (Greek: Λέων της Αμφίπολης) is a 4th-century BC tomb sculpture near Amphipolis, Macedonia, northern Greece. According to archaeologist Dimitris Lazaridis, the first person excavating in the area in the 1960s, it was set up in honour of Laomedon of Mytilene, an important general of Alexander the Great, king of Macedon. It has a height of more than 4 m in its main body. Taking into account the base, it is taller than 8 m. The head has a width of 2 m.
